Akashdeep Brar

My name is Akashdeep Brar and I am running for the position of Faculty of Business Representative with the SFSS this year. My aim is to help maximize the value of our experiences as students while we are here at Simon Fraser University.Screen Shot 2015-03-11 at 9.27.53 PM

I bring with me experience not only as a SFU student, but in many different areas as well. From philanthropic work with a non-profit organization called SOAR, to the nightlife industry, to being a business owner working with both domestic and international firms (including everything from production to sales and marketing). These experiences have given me a vast variety of viewpoints, knowledge, and skills.

As a third year Business student I have had the chance to be a part of multiple clubs within the Beedie School of Business; networking, achieving practical experience, and attending events that furthered my own development as a student. These experiences have helped me create the following goals as the Faculty Representative:

  • Represent the needs of, and address any issues of Beedie students to SFSS. This includes considering relevant Business student interests in any initiatives and decisions carried out as a member of the board of SFSS

  • Work alongside the Business Administration Student Society to create more faculty wide events with an appeal to all Business students, and appropriately assist with the establishment of Departmental Student Unions from student clubs in the faculty of Business

With an interest in other areas of education and collaboration with other like-minded individuals who are also working towards a stronger sense of community, I have also developed goals to benefit both students in the faculty of Business and the general SFU population:

  • Actively communicate SFSS initiatives and proposed events to student clubs and unions, as well as recruit for organizing committees from the general student population or specific faculties. Part of this initiative includes increased collaboration with Council. Increasing communication will serve to increase transparency of the SFSS’s actions.

  • Connect with other faculties on the basis of relatable events, including the various Frosh events, and orientation. The result will be a better sense of community across the spectrum of faculties and improved engagement of students into non-classroom aspects of their education.

  • Increase support for student groups to create and grow events/initiatives that meet a wide variety of interests. I aim to help foster an environment where student innovation is sustainable and long lasting. Specifically, I want to help create the opportunity for students to lead initiatives with autonomy outside of clubs.

If you have any questions, concerns, or issues you would like me to address, please feel free to contact me via email at akash.brar@live.ca

I am simply a man with a vision and a plan, but with your support I can put this plan into action and create a better student experience for all. I thank you for reading this and caring about your Student Society, with just one last request: vote for strong and effective representation, vote for Akashdeep Brar.

Dear Friends, Screen Shot 2015-03-11 at 4.47.51 PM

My name is Hangue Kim and I am running to be the next Business Faculty Representative for the Simon Fraser Student Society.  Simon Fraser University is an amazing institution that is full of incredible individuals that do amazing things. In the past few years, I have seen students get engaged within the community and create friendships, businesses, networks, programs, events, food and more! Seeing all the enthusiasm and excitement within the community was when I decided that I wanted to get more involved and help make a meaningful impact during my time at SFU. I want to help with the daily governance of the student body and help represent the voices of all students.

My background:

  • “Top 25 under 25” by the Surrey Board of Trade

  • National’s Presenter for Enactus Simon Fraser University

  • Manager of Corporate Relations for Enactus Simon Fraser University

  • Founding member and Director of External Relations for Soap for Hope

  • Outreach Assistant for the Simon Fraser Student Society

  • Events Assistant for Simon Fraser University

  • Member of Brooked Events

  • 2014 Peak Case Competition Competitor

  • Volunteer for the Spring 2014 Send Off Concert

  • Volunteer for the Fall 2014 Kick Off Concert

  • Volunteer for the Spring 2015 Send Off Concert

  • Participated and involved in Beedie Protégé, Business Frosh, Bass Mentorship Program and the Beedie Olympics

My involvement in the community at Simon Fraser University has taught me the importance in student engagement and community. That is why I decided to base my platform on the following points to ensure the growth and support of the Beedie School of Business.

  • Advocate for an increase in funding for Business Student Organizations and Clubs for events, room bookings and yearly maintenance costs

  • Continuing to support the establishment of our new Faculty Student Union by working on creating Departmental Student Unions that will benefit the student body with an increase of power in governance in our faculty and an increase in funding.

  • Building a stronger sense of community in the Business Faculty, by establishing networking events that connect students with each other from different Student Organizations, Clubs, campuses and backgrounds.

As a Business Representative, you are also a member of the Board of Director’s and it is the duty of the Representative to voice the opinions and concerns of all students. If elected, as a member of the Board of Directors, I would focus on:

  • Reducing the current Food and Beverage Services (FBS) deficit. Currently we are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars and it is because there is a lack of proficiency and effort put into changing this growing problem. I hope to change this by working closely with the General Manager of the FBS and bringing in my previous experience in the FBS industry to target this problem.

  • Next, I would focus on increasing the amount of bursaries allocated to the students at Simon Fraser. I would focus on increasing the amount so that more students will be able to attend school without the financial struggles faced by many students. I would also work on establishing bursaries for part time students as well, because the reason that students are part time is because they are working to pay for school.

  • Transparency. Right now there is a large disconnect between the Society and its constituents, I want to bridge that gap and inform the students of how their money is being spent. I want to let the students know about all the offerings of the Society and how they can use it to their benefit.

In closing, I would just like to say thank you for taking the time to read my platform and considering me as a candidate for this position. I really do believe in the power of the students and how a small group can create a large impact in the community.  I hope that you share my vision for the Society and it would be an honor to serve as your next Business Representative for the Simon Fraser Student Society, thank you.

Kind Regards,

Hangue Kim
