Candidacy

Becoming a candidate is easy. But first, how much do you know about the SFSS and the positions available? Check out the resources that we’ve put together for you:

  • About the SFSS: Learn about the Board of Directors, executive officers, and faculty and at-large members.
  • Board Positions: Familiarize yourself with the roles and responsibilities of each position, and decide which one most interests you.

Next, read and understand the relevant election rules. Start with the Candidate Handbook as it is easiest to understand, but make sure to review the other documents as well. You will be responsible for following the rules. Ask for clarification on anything you don’t understand.

Obtain a nomination form online or from the IEC office – room 2240 of the Maggie Benston Centre. Collect the signatures of at least 10 members of the SFSS who are eligible to vote for the position you are seeking.

Return your completed nomination form (including the candidate information and declaration form) to a member of the IEC. If the office is closed, you may submit your form directly to a General Office Coordinator (Maggie Benston Centre, room 2250) or to the Surrey Campus Coordinator (Surrey campus, room 3390). Do not submit your nomination form to any other employee. If you submit your form to a General Office Coordinator or the Surrey Campus Coordinator, please send an email to ceo@sfss.ca to confirm that your form is received by the IEC.

The deadline to return a completed nomination form is Monday, March 5th at 12:00pm (noon). Late submissions will not be accepted. It is strongly recommended that forms are submitted early, to allow you time to make any necessary corrections or to obtain additional signatures if some are invalid. The IEC maintains all nominations in confidence until the deadline has passed, so it is in your best interest to submit forms early.

Candidates will also have an opportunity to submit platforms to be published on the IEC website. This will be the only reference voters will have about candidates during voting period. Platforms are due 24 hours after the close of nominations. Late submissions will not be accepted, and platforms may not be edited after they have been submitted.

Please do not hesitate to contact Ali Godson – Chief Electoral Officer at ceo@sfss.ca or drop by the office to speak with one of the Commissioners if you have any questions.
